Akira Toriyama’s must-see saga had been in the public spotlight for years before the introduction of the Super Saiyan concept, but the transformations quickly became part of history.
They also had a massive impact on other Anime, with transformations and “final forms” that are now common in most Japanese Shonen-style storylines (Naruto, Saint Seiya, One Piece…).
The basic concept of the Super Saiyan is to be a member of the Saiyan race who, going beyond the limits of his fighting abilities, succeeds in reaching a completely new stage of power, usually in response to extreme anger or a desperate need of revenge.
When Goku made his debut as a golden-haired warrior during his fight against Freezer, he was the first Saiyan in years to reach this form, but as this form became rudimentary, more and more transformations were added to the manga and anime, each trying to replicate the drama and impact of the original.
Do you really know all the forms the Super Saiyan can take? Read this article and become an absolute master of all the Super Saiyan Transformations!
A. SUPER SAIYAN TRANSFORMATION
The original and the best, which allowed the franchise to take the title of the best metaseries. Dragon Ball has repeatedly tried to recover the essence of the original Goku transformation to Super Saiyan, such as his fight with Lord Frieza on Namek, but never really succeeded.
After Krilin’s death unleashed Goku’s initial transformation, everyone else began to follow the lead, including Sangohan, Trunks, Goten, Vegeta. In terms of strength, the basic form of Super Saiyan remains the weakest of all, but his iconic golden-haired design will always have a special place in the hearts of fans.
B. SUPER SAIYAN STAGE 2 TRANSFORMATION
Early fans who began to think there might be another form beyond the standard Super Saiyan had been proved right by Vegeta and Trunks after consolidating their father-son bond in the hyperbolic chamber of time.
After training desperately to defeat Cell, the two Saiyans came out confident, and Vegeta could have beaten Cell’s second form if his pride hadn’t been in the way.
Rather than a brand new transformation, this grade 2 is just an improvement of the original state, but it still represents a massive power boost, multiplying up to 3 times the strength of the standard Super Saiyan.
C. SUPER SAIYAN STAGE 3 (USSJ) TRANSFORMATION
A transformation rarely seen. Trunks thought he had finally outperformed his father during their practice sessions in the hyperbolic time chamber by not only surpassing the original form of the Super Saiyan but unlocking another enhancement beyond it.
But while Vegeta was disappointed by his pride, Trunks failed because of his inexperience and didn’t realize that the form of Super Saiyan Grade 3 (USSJ Transformation) significantly sacrificed speed to brute strength, while the previous state offered a much better balance, resulting in the optimal form. After proving ineffective against Cell due to its slowness and clutter, this form was abandoned.
D. SUPER SAIYAN 2 TRANSFORMATION
If one transformation scene almost equaled the epic intensity of the fight between Goku and Freezer in the minds of DBZ fans, it’s the one of Gohan transforming into Super Saiyan 2 to defeat Cell’s perfect form.
Enraged by Cell’s defeat of his friends and the destruction of Android 16, Gohan transcends all the sub-stages of the original Super Saiyan and reaches a whole new level of intensity. Rather than just increasing power as in previous years, Super Saiyan 2’s form is characterized by sharper hair, a more pronounced aura, and electric sparks.
E. SUPER SAIYAN 3 (GOKU) TRANSFORMATION
The Super Saiyan 3 (SS3 but also known as Ultra Super Saiyan) – may not have been much of a presence in the Dragon Ball franchise.
However, it remains one of the coolest designs in the entire selection of Saiyan styles, with long silky hair (no it’s not a wig!), missing eyebrows, and angry facial expressions that any revengeful person would be proud of.
Goku achieves this coveted form in the afterlife, but the extreme expenditure of energy makes its use extremely limited.
Nevertheless, reaching the Super Saiyan 3 stage remains the most difficult Saiyan transformation to achieve from the Majin Buu saga to the Battle of Gods movie. Unfortunately, only Goku and Gotenks (Trunks and Goten merged) use this particular form, and it was quickly made obsolete with the appearance of the almighty Beerus.
F. SUPER SAIYAN GOD TRANSFORMATION
The film Dragon Ball Battle of Gods, released in 2013, introduced a distinctly different transformation. Interestingly, this form was not achieved through training, anger, or ki level, but through the spirit of cooperation.
A Saiyan reaches God’s ki through a ritual, with 5 other Saiyans channeling their energy into this sixth, triggering a metamorphosis beyond that of a Super Saiyan 3, and transforming their hair and energy field into a rich red hue. In this state of serenity, Goku is able to fight more evenly with the God of Destruction of Universe 7, Beerus, but still cannot defeat him. As for Vegeta, our protagonist had to endure rigorous training alongside Whis to master this form.
G. SUPER SAIYAN BLUE (SSGSS) TRANSFORMATION
While most fans were excited by the introduction of the Super Saiyan God, the red form, unfortunately, didn’t stay in vogue for long and was quickly replaced by the Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (known as Super Saiyan Blue or SSJB).
This transformation combined the Ki God of its predecessor with the glowing energy of the Super Saiyan, thus creating a superior form, but it later turned out that the original red-haired level was both faster and expended less energy. Because of his status as a true Kai, the version of this state for Goku Black results in a pink, rather than blue coloration which is called Super Saiyan Rosé.
